Reorganisation measures at the Kranzler Eck Berlin are already under way. The plans have been drawn up by the renowned architectural design firm HWKN from New York, which has been named among the ‘Most Innovative Companies 2024’ by the magazine Fast Company.

As part of the reorganisation measures, the aviary courtyard is also being given a modern makeover. Consultations with the authorities are already at an advanced stage and a new home has been found for all 19 birds.

They will be relocated to Vogelburg Weilrod, a public park for birds in the heart of the ‘Hochtaunus’ reservation area. Vogelburg has been providing a high-quality home for parrots – not to mention parakeets – since 1981.

All of the parakeets currently housed in the aviary at the Kranzler Eck Berlin are bred species. As such, they have never learned how to hunt and survive in the wild. Furthermore, the plumage of bred bird species cannot be found in nature. If they were released into the wild, they would never be able to join flocks of wild birds or find mating partners.

For these reasons, moving to a new home is the best option for the birds, not least because this is where all species meet conspecifics, which is of considerable importance in terms of the well-being of birds as social creatures.

Instead of the cages, the courtyard will become a place where people can take a breather. It will also provide a suitable natural environment for the birds found in Berlin. The planting of insect-friendly shrubs, flowers and trees will help to maintain the ecological balance.

There will also be seating areas within the green oasis, which will still allow people to take the weight off their feet and escape the hustle and bustle for a while.

Information on the start of the construction work can be found here once all the official procedures have been completed

It is expected that the birds in the aviary courtyard can still be visited until autumn 2024. You can find further information in the FAQs:
